“FAFO”: How The Stray Sons Found Their Voice Again

With their new single “FAFO,” The Stray Sons aren’t easing into the conversation, they’re confronting it head-on. Written in response to behind-the-scenes noise during their first years established, and shaped by years of persistence, the track captures a band that has learned when to listen, when to ignore, and when to speak for themselves. It’s a statement rooted in experience, confidence, and a refusal to water down who they are.

Unlike past releases, this song was never tested onstage, meaning they didn't experience feedback from an audience. The band wrote it, refined it privately, and took it straight into the studio as something unfinished but honest.

“Usually we’ll play a song live for a year before recording it,” Brad said. “This time, no one had heard it. It wasn’t perfect performance-wise, and that’s what made it real.” That approach alone sets “FAFO” apart, but it’s only part of the story.

A Different Way In

Recorded in Fort Worth, “FAFO” was shaped in a space that allowed the band to step outside expectations and lean into what felt natural. Working away from home gave The Stray Sons freedom to blend their full range of influences, rock, metal, and country, without pressure to fit a specific mold. “This isn’t a knock on Amarillo at all,” Brad emphasized. “But getting away helped us make something that sounds like us, not what we think we’re supposed to be.”

That freedom was amplified by reuniting with producer Jared Flusche at The Bolt Audio. Known for his work with Koe Wetzel and Giovannie and the Hired Guns, Fluscia pushed the band creatively, especially the guitar work, encouraging layered parts and textures they hadn’t tried before. “When we started hearing those guitar layers come together, we knew this one was special,” Brad said. “He pushed us to do things we’d never done, and it worked.”

A New Lineup, a New Energy

“FAFO” also marks the first studio recording with a completely new lineup:

  • Brad Sanders – lead vocals / rhythm guitar

  • Jared Golden – lead guitar

  • Kyle Hollis – rhythm guitar

  • Stephen Renteria – bass

  • Greg Grice – drums

At the time of recording, this group hadn’t played a single show together. Drummer Greg had only four performances under his belt with the band. “This is a brand-new version of The Stray Sons,” Brad said. “No one has seen or heard this lineup yet.” That unfamiliarity didn’t slow the process, but instead it sharpened it. Each member leaned fully into their role, bringing a rawness that fits the song’s intent.

What “FAFO” Is Really About

While “FAFO” carries a confrontational edge, it wasn’t written from anger at all. Instead it was written from being tired. “I’m the type of person who believes if you’ve got something to say, say it to my face,” Brad said. “This song came from being fed up with the behind-the-scenes talk.”

Lyrically, the song draws from Brad’s background in professional wrestling, structured like a promo by being direct, confident, and unflinching. Though rooted in real experiences, it isn’t aimed at one person or even just the music scene.

It’s bigger than that. It’s about calling out anyone who talks loud online but won’t stand behind it in real life.

“FAFO” is about reclaiming their identity. After experimenting with sounds that didn’t quite feel like home, the band sees this single as a return to their core. “This feels like us again,” Brad said. “This is the song that follows ‘Lowdown.’”

If there’s one track that has connected most with listeners so far, it’s “Lowdown S.O.B.” Right now, it stands as The Stray Sons’ most-streamed song. A standing proof that their blend of grit, melody, and real-life storytelling hits hard. The song’s raw energy and relatable punch have made it a standout for both longtime fans and new listeners alike.

Support That Helped Shape the Song

The ability to record “FAFO” the way they wanted was made possible through real, tangible support. Longtime sponsor Fat Boy Hat Company helped cover the business side of the project, while backing from The Blind Pig made the studio trip itself possible. “That support gave us peace of mind,” Brad said. “When you’re not stressed about logistics, you can focus on making the best song possible.”

Brad says one of the most encouraging parts of this chapter has been seeing the local music scene show up for them in real, tangible ways. As the frontman of The Stray Sons, he’s felt firsthand how much a little belief can change the trajectory of a project and not just creatively, but emotionally. More than anything, he hopes this kind of support doesn’t stop with his band. His vision is bigger than one release or one group. He wants to see more local bands backed by venues, businesses, and community members who believe in original music and are willing to invest in its growth. To Brad, that kind of support is how a music scene doesn’t just survive, but truly moves forward together.

What Listeners Should Expect

For first-time listeners, “FAFO” is meant to hit hard, not just sonically, but emotionally. “I hope it makes people feel empowered,” Brad said. “Like they can stand up for themselves.” And for longtime fans, the single represents something familiar but evolved: The Stray Sons, unapologetically themselves, louder and more confident than before.

With the release date now set for April 18, “FAFO” stands as the latest step forward for the band.. The single has already opened the door to what comes next, with additional recording sessions scheduled and the next two songs already chosen. For The Stray Sons, this release is not just a response to the past, it is a clear step forward.

This time, we’re not rushing. We want to be 100% proud of it.

With “FAFO,” The Stray Sons aren’t trying to fit in or prove a point. They’re simply saying what needs to be said. By letting the song speak for itself.
